‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor, surfer Tamayo Perry killed in shark attack

Tamayo Perry, a legendary surfer and actor who appeared in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, was killed in a shark attack Sunday in Hawaii.

Perry, 49, was attacked while surfing off the coast of Oahu near Goat Island on Sunday afternoon, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department said.

A caller reported seeing a fatally injured surfer at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu. Lifeguards were able to bring him to shore, but paramedics declared Perry dead at the scene. He was reportedly missing multiple limbs and had sustained bite wounds.

“He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide,” Honolulu Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services acting chief Kurt Lager said at a press conference. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”

Honolulu mayor Rick Blangiardi praised Perry as “a legendary waterman” who won the the Pipeline Masters 1999.

Perry went on to appear in a number of movies and TV shows shot in Hawaii, including “Blue Crush,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Hawaii Five-0.”
