Pixar's short Bao is so good, it's making people cry

From Digital Spy

Incredibles 2 is out right now in the United States (and it has good reviews), but many people are talking about the Pixar short preceding it instead.

Bao, written and directed by Chinese-Canadian Domee Shi, has been widely praised as one of Pixar's best shorts yet.

It centres on a lonely Chinese mother who gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life – and (avoiding spoilers here) the way the story speaks to Asians in particular is making such an impact that Asian cinemagoers have been in tears.

Lots and lots of tears, in fact:

But it's also a story that has universal themes, such as parenthood, leading others to burst out crying as well.

Some people even declared that in its brief eight-minute running time, Bao overshadows the feature-length Incredibles 2.

"Everyone in the world has been an overprotective parent who won't let go of their kid or the kid who has left the nest," Shi told Time in a recent interview. "And they're brought together by food at some point.

"We're using that universal theme of food and family as a Trojan horse to introduce people to baos and Chinatown and what a Chinese home looks and feels like."

Incredibles 2 is out in the UK on Friday, July 13 and out now in the US.
