Pizza-lovers in New Zealand could soon get hold of their favourite treat more easily than after, after Domino’s trialled the first commercial drone delivery service today.

The pizza giant, which has partnered with drone delivery company Flirtey, carried out a demonstration delivery by drone in Auckland and plans to launch a full service later this year.

Dubbed ‘Dru Drone’, the futuristic delivery method will work alongside Domino’s current methods and will be integrated into the company’s online ordering system.

Domino’s is not the only firm planning to use drones for delivery, with both Amazon and Google investing in drone technology.

But it could become the first commercial drone delivery service, after New Zealand became one of the first countries to allow commercial drone deliveries last year.

Domino’s has reportedly said it wants to trial drone deliveries in other countries including Australia, France, Japan and Germany.

Drone deliveries are set to be legal in Australia next month, providing they stay at least 100ft (30m) from houses, while in the U.S. drone deliveries will be allowed from the end of the month, but can’t go across state lines or over people.
