A Place in the Sun host in tears as ex-Mr Wales finds dream property for 'emotional' reason

People appear on Channel 4's A Place in the Sun for many different reasons and one Welsh couple, including a former Mr Wales, reduced host Jean Johansson to tears for their reasons. Joanne and Darren, who is a bodybuilding champion, had very emotional reasons for appearing on the show.

They were looking for a holiday home on Spain's eastern Costa del Sol. The couple wanted a place big enough that all their family, including three children and their own parents, could enjoy. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.

But Joanne and Darren particularly wanted somewhere to remember Joanne's brother, Matt. Joanne said: "My brother sadly passed away ten years ago and one of our last conversations was that I had to make sure that we have as much fun as possible and live the dream with our children. Because he loved the beach and being abroad so much we thought this would be the perfect way to honour his memory."

After looking at different properties, within their budget of £180,000, they opted for an apartment and originally put in an offer of £170,000 as they wanted to do some work to the property. Talking about making the offer, Joanne said: "I do feel emotional, I just know this is what my brother would want and I am sure he is just looking down now with a big smile on his face."

This first offer was rejected so they upped their offer to £178,000 which was, to their utter delight, accepted. Openly emotional Joanne said: "This is for you, Matt! We can now live the dream in my brother's memory and the family can come here and think about him, my mum and dad, it just feels so close to Matt when we are at the beach and they can come here anytime they want now!"
