Born and raised in Durham, chef Tom Anglesea, star of the BBC’s Great British Menu, has worked for the likes of Gordon Ramsay and Nuno Mendes. In 2016, Anglesea became head chef at The Laughing Heart in Hackney, east London, but he still visits Durham regularly, taking inspiration from the food scene where he grew up.

“Certain spots have been there since I was young, like La Spaghettata, which is an amazing Italian place,” says Anglesea. “It’s stood the test of time.” The chef has also noted an increasing diversity in the city’s cuisine, from “really good” Sichuan food to top Turkish spots. “There’s a little bit for everyone.”

“It’s a great spot – a restaurant, pub and café all in one. It caters to everyone. They do everything from breakfasts to afternoon cakes, teas and dinner. It still has a cellar, they’ve done it really well. Last time I had mince and dumplings, a staple northern dish we grew up on. It’s rare to find on menus, but it’s fantastic.”

Flat White Kitchen

“It’s tiny, really quaint, with a lovely little outside terrace. It has so much character, is always busy, and the staff are amazing. It’s just a really great place to spend half an hour and take a coffee with a pastry or cake.”

“An amazing pub that feels like it hasn’t been touched in more than 60 years – there’s the same wallpaper, the same kind of people drinking there. A little gem of a place. There’s a great selection of real ales, and it has rooms upstairs.”

“An old-school Victorian market, with the same butcher’s, fishmonger’s and tobacconist as when I was a kid. It’s a good little spot. My mum gets the Christmas turkey from the butcher every year.”

La Spaghettata

“A place we always go with friends or family on a night out. It’s been there since day one. Fabio, the owner, is always there to greet you. It’s cheap, loud, bustling, with massive bowls of pasta. A great spot to spend the night, and I always go for the king prawn linguine.”
