Plans for 30 new homes to be built next to Somerset golf club

Up to 30 new homes could soon be built near a popular Somerset golf club following an acquisition by a major developer. Cricket St. Thomas Golf Club lies on the A30 between Chard and Crewkerne, boasting an impressive 18-hole course and a clubhouse a stone's throw from the Windwhistle Inn public house.

The land north of the club house, which includes car parking and an agricultural unit, has been purchased by the Acorn Property Group, a major developer based in Bristol. The developer intends to build up to 30 one- and two-bedroom flats on the site, marketed at people wishing to downsize but remain in Somerset.

Each of the 30 flats will be energy efficient, boasting views of "rural landscapes from an elevated position", with residents having "easy access to the desirable amenities of the south west. Regional managing director Robin Squire said: "We are thrilled to bring new homes to this beautiful area of Somerset. Our team is dedicated to creating high-quality, sustainable new homes that respect the local character."

Acorn's operations in Somerset have largely been convened to the east of the county in recent years, focussed around the delivery of the Longcroft site on the A359 Frome Road in Bruton and the construction of 159 homes on the Old Printworks site on Caxton Road in Frome.

The developer remains in close discussions with Somerset Council over its vision for the Saxonvale brownfield site in Frome town centre, after its initial planning permission was quashed on judicial review. The company also holds permission to deliver 60 new homes on Brewham Lane in Bruton, though delivery of these has stalled as a result of the ongoing phosphates crisis.

A formal planning application for the Cricket St. Thomas site is expected to be submitted to the council by the end of the current year.
