Plans unveiled to build 40 flats on former Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick

Plans to build new seafront flats on the site of a former children's cancer home in Prestwick have been unveiled.

An application has been lodged by Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd to develop 40 flats within four blocks at the former Malcolm Sargent House on Links Road, adjacent to Prestwick Golf Club.

The apartments would be 3.5 storeys in height, with a mix of two, three and four bedrooms - with penthouse appartments boasting their own balconies. Car parking space for 50 vehicles would be provided.

The former Malcolm Sargent House provided a retreat for children battling cancer for more than 25 years and was opened by Princess Diana in 1989. Its work received the backing of many celebrities down the years, including Sir Sean Connery and Sir Jackie Stewart, as it raised millions of pounds. It was sold in 2017 by owners CLIC Sargent after claims of a “challenging fundraising environment."

Developers McCarthy & Stone pulled the plug on an attempt to build 69 flats after a row over the "design and scale" of their proposed project. The House was then demolished and the site has since been left vacant.

David Smith, managing director of Prestwick-based Ashleigh, told Ayrshire Live: "We're delighted to present the proposals at what I believe is one of the best sites in the west of Scotland. The location is one which means a lot to the town and the plans for development will be tasteful and high-end."
