Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo will have been thinking he should have scored himself after assisting Bruno Fernandes in Portugal's win over Turkey at the weekend.

Despite having just the goalkeeper to beat, Ronaldo chose not to take a shot in a bid to score his first goal of the tournament, instead setting up Fernandes for an easy finish.

The act of generosity from the former United striker caught viewers off guard, including Brown, who suggested on the latest episode of the Euro Thrash podcast that Ronaldo might have regretted not going for goal himself.

Brown joked on the podcast, available on YouTube, Apple, and Spotify: "I'm looking at his face afterwards and he was thinking 'I could have just slotted that past the 'keeper', but that is Ronnie, that is what he has always strived for."

He added: "In his mind, he will have been thinking 'I should have scored there'. It's nothing personal, he is that guy who wants to be top of the charts everywhere and that is why he has been so good for so many years."

Despite not scoring yet at Euro 2024, Brown praised Ronaldo's performances for Portugal, who have advanced to the knockout stages after two group match victories.

"He has looked good, really confident and back to himself," Brown said. "You can see he is still trying to give it all.

"Sometimes I think him and Bruno both like the ball, so you wonder what is going to happen, but everyone seems to be jolly and nice and he's fitting in well."

Elsewhere at Euro 2024, some of the England players have hit back at comments made by Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer after the Three Lions' lacklustre 1-1 draw with Denmark.

Former England international Brown, who has 23 caps to his name, admitted there's always immense pressure from the media on the national team, saying: "I don't think we make it any easier for the lads but that is part and parcel of football. I think that we all understand that as footballers. It is those who deal with that best who normally win.

"We have put a lot of pressure on the lads in this tournament, everybody has fully expected us to win with the players that we have got."
