Ozon has said previously cryptically said that When Fall Is Coming is inspired by a childhood memory and revolves around a crime family dinner.
As per a new synopsis sent out in a wide release by Playtime on Wednesday, the film revolves around grandmother, Michelle, who is enjoying a peaceful retirement in a charming Burgundy village, close to her long-time friend Marie-Claude.
She is looking forward to her grandson spending the school vacation. However, when her Parisian daughter, with whom she has a conflictual relationship, drops him off, things do not go to plan and she inexplicably serves her toxic mushrooms for lunch.
The daughter recovers but bans her mother from seeing her grandson. Lonely and feeling guilty, Michelle loses her sense of purpose… until Marie-Claude’s son gets out of prison.
The cast features Hélène Vincent (The Specials), Josiane Balasko (Back to Mom’s)), Ludivine Sagnier (Lupin) and Pierre Lottin “Notre-Dame on Fire).
The $5.6M (4.8M euros) production has been acquired by Diaphana Distribution for France.
Playtime also announced that it had acquired sibling directorial duo Delphine and Muriel Coulin’s new film The Quiet Son.
Vincent Lindon stars as a devoted father of two sons, played by Benjamin Voisin and Stefan Crepon, who he raised alone. As the youngest son prepares to leave home to pursue his studies in Paris, his older, less academically successful sibling becomes more and more secretive.
Driven by a fascination for violence, the latter gets entangled in far-right extremist groups, at the very opposite of his father’s values, pushing their relationship to the limits.
The $4.7M production is produced by Olivier Delbosc at Curiosa Films and Marie Guillaumond at Felicita Films. Ad Vitam has acquired French rights.
“The Quiet Son marks our third collaboration with the two sister directors Delphine and Muriel Coulin, after The Stopover and 17 Girls, and When Fall Is Coming is our ninth partnership with François Ozon, including this time again as co-producers,” said Playtime CEO Nicolas Brigaud-Robert.
“Playtime is committed to work with talents in the long term, building the international exposure they deserve over the years. I believe our last two pick-ups are a clear example of this”.
