A council pleaded with vandals to stop after a spate of criminal damage in Witney.

A bus shelter at Newland in the town was targeted overnight on Sunday (June 23) and glass in the windows were smashed.

Witney Town Council said in a statement that it was "hugely disheartening and disappointing".

"In addition, a hanging basket stand was also broken by the Town Hall over the weekend," said the council.

It added that taxpayers would be footing the bill for the vandalism.

"Every time this happens there is a cost of repair for materials and labour, paid for by residents," the statement continued.

"It also takes the council’s team away from maintaining other areas."

Anyone with information about either incident should contact Thames Valley Police on the non-emergency number 101.
