Plymouth Argyle striker Ben Waine wins OFC Nations Cup with New Zealand

Ben Waine started for New Zealand as they beat Vanuatu 3-0 in the final of the OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) Nations Cup.

The Plymouth Argyle striker led the attack for the All Whites for the first 73 minutes of the match, which was played at the Freshwater Stadium in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu. It was 1-0 at the time when Waine made way for Jesse Randall, who put New Zealand 2-0 up, before Max Mata further extended their lead in added time.

Waine finished as the second top scorer at the Nations Cup with four goals, one behind Fiji's Roy Krishna, who netted in their 2-1 defeat by Tahiti in the third place play-off.

It is now expected that 23-year-old Waine will be included in the New Zealand squad for the men's football tournament at the 2024 Olympics in France.

The All Whites are in Group A and will play their opening game against Guinea in Nice on July 24. They will then take on the United States three days later before facing France on July 30, with the latter two matches both in Marseille.

The top two nations in each of the four groups will advance to the quarter-finals, which will take place on August 2. Argyle will begin their 2024/25 Championship campaign nine days later, away to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on August 11.
