New podcast launched on disappearance of Moira Anderson

A NEW podcast has been launched looking into the disappearance of Moira Anderson. 

The new nine part series titled Coatbridge: The Disappearance of Moira Anderson has been released by Audible and reveals the true story behind one of Scotland's oldest cases.

The story is told from the perspective of Sandra Brown, a neighbour who became closer to the case than she ever imagined.

Moira, who was from Coatbridge, was just 11-years-old when she vanished on February 23, 1957 after popping out to buy a birthday card for her mother.

She was last seen on a bus being driven by convicted paedophile Alexander Gartshore.

The case was treated by police as a missing person until 2012 when it was upgraded to a murder investigation. Her remains have never been found and Police Scotland’s cold case unit continues to investigate her death.

In 2014, Gartshore was named as Moira's likely killer by then Lord Advocate, Frank Mulholland QC. The Crown Office previously said he would have been arrested for her murder were he still alive.

The new series begins with the fallout from Moira's disappearance and how quickly the investigation went cold until decades later, during a conversation at a funeral, Gartshore's daughter Sandra heard an offhand comment that set her world spinning.

In Sandra’s own words, she recounts the story alongside journalist, Rachael Revesz.

Offering new insights into developments from 2006 to the present, listeners will also hear from relatives, police detectives and journalists who covered the case, alongside archive audio, and tapes from hypnotherapy sessions Sandra underwent in her search for answers.

As the full story comes to light, Sandra uncovers a culture of abuse, secrets and lies from those closest to her.

In 2018, the Glasgow Times reported a woman who heard a scream and saw footprints in the snow could hold vital clues to Moira's disappearance.

Detectives from Police Scotland’s Cold Case Unit believe the woman, who now lives in France, is a credible witness.

She was walking to a farmhouse where she was lodging on the edge of Coatbridge when she heard a scream. In the snow she spotted footprints, but a couple in the farmhouse knew nothing about them.
