That forthcoming Detective Pikachu movie has bagged itself a release date.

The live-action Pokémon film tells the story of Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), who enlists the help of pint-sized yellow investigator Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) to search for his father after he gets kidnapped.

It has now been revealed that Detective Pikachu will open in cinemas in the US on Friday, May 10, 2019, according to Coming Soon.

Detective Pikachu will be the first live-action film based on the globally popular Pokemon franchise. Rights to the movie were bought by Legendary Entertainment earlier this year.

Alongside Reynolds and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom star Smith, the film will also feature Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton as a sassy journalist who joins the quest to find Goodman's missing dad.

Rob Letterman, of Goosebumps and Shark Tale fame, will direct the feature film, while Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) take lead writing credits on the project.

News of the film's release date quickly follows last week's announcement that Ryan Reynolds will play the titular role of Detective Pikachu.

The Deadpool star will do motion capture and provide the voice for the iconic Pokemon character.

With a 2019 release date, Detective Pikachu will fall behind Ryan's next project Deadpool 2, which opens in June 2018.

No word on when his X-Force movie will be released yet, but we do know Deadpool 2 villain Cable (Josh Brolin) will also be involved.

Detective Pikachu will be in cinemas in the US from Friday, May 10, 2019.
