Police have launched an investigation after a car “collided with the body of a woman” on the M66 close to Manchester.

The shocking incident happened early on Thursday.

Officers were called to the motorway at around 2am following reports that a vehicle had crashed with a body on the road

When they arrived they found the body of a woman on the carriageway, a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said.

Subsequently, the road was closed for several hours between junction 1 and junction 3.

The road was only opened again just after midday, according to the GMP, some 10 hours after the incident was reported.

Detectives are continuing to investigate how the body came to be on the carriageway in the first place.

“Investigative work is currently being carried out on the M66 following a collision, said the GMP.

“Shortly after 2am this morning, police were called to reports that a car had collided with a body on the M66 Northbound in Bury.

The statement continued: “Emergency services attended and sadly found the body of a woman.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish how the woman came to be in the carriageway.”

Highways England had warned that the incident was so serious the road would have to be closed for several hours.

The M66 is an eight-mile stretch of motorway serving Manchester and nearby towns including Bury.
