A hero police dog who helped in aftermath of two London terror attacks has won an award dubbed an "animal OBE".

Kai, a three-year-old springer spaniel puppy who is part of the Met Police’s Explosive Detection Dog Team, will receive the PDSA order of merit at a ceremony later this year.

She was deployed after both the Westminster Bridge and London Bridge terror attacks, despite having only qualified a few months earlier.

Kai searched the car that crashed into the Palace of Westminster for a bomb in the immediate aftermath of the attack in March 2017.

She also checked more than a dozen buildings for explosive devices in the wake of the London Bridge attack in June of the same year.

Her handler, Jean Pearce, told the Telegraph: “She is a very, very special dog.”

Kai is one of seven dogs from the Met and the British Transport Police (BTP) being recognised for their efforts in response to the two attacks, which shook the capital in 2017
