Police in London were forced to smash into a car to rescue a dog that was trapped inside as the country baked in 32C temperatures.

The pooch was left inside a vehicle in Petts Wood, Bromley, on Monday afternoon, at the peak of the hot weather in the latest heatwave to hit the country.

Officers broke the front window of the parked car to let it out before it suffocated, giving it some water to cool down.

The force have now lashed out at dog owners for leaving their pets inside cars in ‘completely unacceptable’ hot conditions.

They tweeted: ‘It’s still 32 degrees. This is completely unacceptable #DogsDieInHotCars.’

They added: ‘Fortunately due to early intervention the dog didn’t come to serious harm, owner has been given very strong words of advice.

‘He will be responsible for paying for the damage to his window which should act as a suitable deterrent against doing the same thing again in future.’

Twitter users were quick to praise the officers for saving the dog’s life:

The RSPCA has warned about the dangers of keeping dogs in hot cars during the UK heatwave, urging people to call 999 if they see a trapped animal.

The charity added that people have the right to free the dog by smashing the windows themselves but should tell the police first and take photos as they could be charged with criminal damage.
