Police investigating incident involving protesters at Pride event

POLICE are investigating an incident at a Pride event.

Winsford Pride made a triumphant return on Saturday (June 22) as record crowds flocked to the marina to celebrate diversity and love.

Many local organisations were in attendance, including the Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit.

They have reported that whilst protests at the event were 'largely peaceful', there is one incident being investigated.

A spokesperson for the force said: “On Saturday (June 22), officers from Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit had a small community engagement stand at the Winsford Pride event.

“A small number of counter-protesters were also present at the event, all of whom were largely peaceful.

“During the event, two incidents were reported to police, one of which is currently being investigated.”

Drag queens GemiTy and Stella Black were among those to take to the stage at Winsford Pride.

They were joined by musicians such as Mutt and Jeff, soul singer Lee Mackenzie and Andy Hofton, who once performed on stage with Robbie Williams.

Visitors could also enjoy face painting, stilt walkers, mocktails, and a variety of local vendors.

There were some small protests but thanks to the work of police and Winsford Town Council staff, these didn’t disrupt the festivities.

Stella Black said: "The day was amazing, it’s great to see another town in Cheshire do their bit to bring inclusivity and diversity to it.

"It was a pleasure as a drag queen to feel so welcomed into a community.

"Although there were protestors which was a shame. The security team did an amazing job looking after us queens and we all did our best to send the protestors love because as an LGBTQIA+ community that’s what we do.

"We send them love because they clearly don’t have enough in their lives if that’s how they want to spend their time."

Mayor of Winsford, councillor Wayne Fletcher, added: “We are incredibly proud of the turnout and the overwhelming support from the community.

“The spirit of Pride was truly alive and we are grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate love and equality.

“The minor protest reminded us of the importance of standing together and continuing our efforts toward acceptance and inclusion.”
