Police officers given lift during dramatic chase by a LEARNER DRIVER

A learner driver gave police officers a lift during a dramatic chase that finished up with an arrest.

The female driver was taking a lesson with her instructor when she stopped to help police in south-west London.

Officers from Chessington Safer Neighbourhood team were running to help colleagues chasing a man acting suspiciously in Merrett Gardens on Thursday night at about 8pm.

The suspect had run off when approached by police, sparking a dramatic foot chase.

Kingston Police said on Facebook that officers lost sight of the suspect about 500m into the chase when he went round a corner.

After a member of the public pointed to where the suspect was hiding, the officers closed in on him.

However, he managed to struggle free and officers called for assistance.

The two officers from the Safer Neighbourhood team were on foot patrol and started running the 1.2 miles to help their colleagues.

As they did so, they flagged down passing cars. The first car that stopped had the learner driver at the wheel.

She dropped the officers near the scene and the officers were able to support their colleagues and arrest the suspect.

Police are trying to trace the learner driver to thank her for her assistance.
