Dutch military police say they have shot a man with a knife at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

The man was threatening passengers at the airport, police said, adding that the situation was now under control.

In a tweet, the Marechaussee police service says the "situation is safe" and the suspect has been detained and removed from the scene.

No further information was immediately available. The airport terminal was evacuated. NOS news said that Schiphol Plaza, a shopping area near passport control, was temporarily evacuated. There were no reports of injuries.

Schiphol, just outside Amsterdam, is one of Europe's busiest airports.
