Police have explained why a number of officers and cars were seen in Helston town centre today (Wednesday).

It was reported just before 10.30am that several police officers were going in and out of shops at the top of Meneage Street, with traffic backed up towards Meneage Road.

According to reports, officers were seen going in and out of shops at the top of Meneage Street at 10.20am. They were then seen heading towards Trengrouse Way Car Park, via Horse and Jockey Lane.

A source who was in town at the time contacted the Packet. She said: “Police cars and police are going in and out of shops with the police car sirens going.

All the traffic was blocked as the police van was in the way, and officers were running in and out of shops up the alleyway next to the pasty shop towards the car park.”

However, another source confirmed that officers were still present in the town centre at 2pm.

Police have now explained why officers are present in the town.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “This is part of enquiries to locate an assault suspect. Enquiries are ongoing.”
