Police share 'deplorable' picture of man 'cleaning' vehicle at 60mph on busy road

This shocking image captured the moment a motorist leaned out of a car on a busy road to 'clean' his friend's vehicle 'for banter'.

Lincolnshire Police posted the image on Twitter of a figure leaning from one car across a lane to touch another at 60mph on the busy A1.

The force posted the image on Twitter, describing it as "deplorable behaviour".

The incident happened in wet weather on the A1 at Grantham in Lincolnshire on Saturday.

The tweet from Lincolnshire Police Specialist Operations said: "This deplorable behaviour was witnessed by #RPU on the A1 dual carriageway in GRANTHAM today, travelling at 60mph.

"Passenger was cleaning his friends vehicle for 'banter'. Driver and passenger reported for multiple offences and section 59 warning issued."

What can and can't you do while driving on a busy road?

The rules for driving are extensive and require experience and a driving test, but here are some guidelines according to the Highway Code, which states you must NOT:-

• drive dangerously

• drive without due care and attention

• drive without reasonable consideration for other road users

You must also not drive on or over a pavement, footpath or bridleway except to gain lawful access to property, or in the case of an emergency.

The Highway Code also states that motorists should adapt their driving to the appropriate type and condition of road they are on, including:-

• not treating speed limits as a target and not driving at the maximum speed limit

• taking the road and traffic conditions into account

• being prepared for road users emerging at junctions

• being prepared to stop at traffic control systems, road works, pedestrian crossings or traffic lights

• anticipating what pedestrians and cyclists might do

Instructions include:-

• Not throwing anything out of a vehicle such as food or food packaging, cigarette ends, cans, paper or carrier bags

• Being patient and remembering that anyone can make a mistake

• Not allowing yourself to become agitated or involved if someone is behaving badly on the road

• Not smoking in public transport vehicles or in vehicles used for work purposes in certain prescribed circumstances

• Avoiding distractions when driving or riding such as loud music, trying to read maps, inserting a cassette or CD or tuning a radio, arguing with your passengers or other road users, eating and drinking, or smoking
