The man, who is wearing shorts but no top, remains on top of the roof. Officers are still engaging with the man in an attempt to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. They have also extended the cordon around the property.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before midday today (Tuesday), we received a report of a disturbance at an address on Coniston Avenue in Hebburn. It was reported that a man had climbed onto the roof of a property and was refusing to come down.

"Officers are currently in attendance at the scene and are engaging with the man in an attempt to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. A cordon is in place."

At one point, the man was standing at the very top of the building and appeared to throw what looked like roof slates.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said they were called to the incident this morning but have now been stood down by police. A spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident at an address in Hebburn at 11.14am this morning (25 June).

"We dispatched an ambulance crew and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team, but all three resources have now left having been stood down by the police."
