Police have explained why there was a helicopter search over Bedworth in the early hours of this morning. It was reported to be circling around the Smorrall Lane and Dark Lane area of town and the sound of sirens could also be heard.

CoventryLive contacted Warwickshire Police and a spokesperson said the National Police Air Service (NPAS) was called into action as part of a police chase. As we reported, a Toyota Hilux was stolen from outside a home in Milby Drive, Nuneaton.

Members of the force's Operational Patrol Unit (OPU) chased the car as they tried to get the driver to stop. They tracked it from Nuneaton towards Bedworth.

The helicopter was also involved in the chase which then headed towards Ash Green and Keresley. "The driver attempted to reverse ram us a number of times before continuing to drive dangerously in order to escape," the team said.

But they then lost the car in the Vicarage Lane area. However, they later found the stolen car crashed and abandoned on the A446 near Coleshill.

Officers said there was a phone left inside it and it will be used as part of the investigation to track down the thief.
