Scientists have called on the government to raise the social distancing gap to three metres, it has been reported.

Members of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) have advised increasing the gap from two metres to “two metres plus”, the Daily Mail reported.

On Tuesday, Britain’s most senior police officer, Metropolitan Police commissioner Dame Cressida Dick, said those who break the coronavirus lockdown rules are “increasingly likely” to face fines.

Writing in The Times, she said: “It is preposterous to me that anyone could be unaware of our duty to do all we can to stop the spread of the virus.

“We have been clear that those who breach COVID-19 legislation are increasingly likely to face fines.”

However, two friends who met for a walk at a reservoir in Derbyshire have had their £200 fines rescinded.

Meanwhile, police are investigating reports of officers breaching lockdown rules by eating in a London cafe.
