It's that time of year again - the 'pollen bomb' is set to return.

15 million hay fever sufferers could be hit with symptoms soon, as trees release pollen which stirs up to look like smoke in what has been dubbed a 'pollen bomb'. For hay fever sufferers, this will come as bad news for day-to-day life and sleep disruption too.

However, experts at Sleepseeker have revealed the five ways you could beat hay fever and alleviate some of the worst symptoms, Wales Online reports.

Nettle tea

Drinking a cup of nettle tea before going to bed could help with nighttime symptoms. The herb is a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory, which could help nasal congestion and sneezing.

The tea can be purchased online or instore for as little as £5, so it's definitely worth a go.

Silk pillowcases

Swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk one as the material could prevent allergens like dust mites from accumulating. They are also less likely to attract and hold onto allergens compared to normal pillowcases.

Silk bedding has other benefits too, including hair protection and helping to retain skin moisture.

Acupressure mats

Acupressure mats stimulate pressure points in your body which can help with hay fever symptoms. The mats could help with congestion and promote better sleep.

Chewing gum before bed

An odd one, but chewing gum before bed could help to clear your nasal passages and reduce congestion. This works by promoting saliva production and swallowing, helping to flush out allergens.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils, such as eucalyptus or peppermint have natural decongestant properties to clear your nasal passages. These oils can be diffused in your bedroom or applied topically by diluting in carrier oil, before bed.

Anush Pervez, a sleep expert at Sleepseeker, said: “These unusual methods, combined with conventional hay fever treatments such as anti-allergy bedding and medicines, can help alleviate symptoms and promote better sleep during allergy season. As always, consult with a healthcare professional before trying any new treatments or remedies.”
