A popular Instagram cat named Mr Muk has been reunited with his owner as police arrested a man on suspicion of theft.

The 10-year-old Siberian Forest cat, which has its own Instagram account with hundreds of followers, has been found following an appeal in the Standard in mid-September.

Police said the cat was snatched from outside his home in Petherton Road, Canonbury, nearly two months ago.

A Met Police spokesman said a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft at a property in West Hampstead shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

"The cat is now back with its owner," the spokesman added,

Police had launched a manhunt earlier this month for a suspected catnapper accused of grabbing Mr Muk before boarding a train at Canonbury Station on July 30.

“At 11.50pm on Tuesday, a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft," a Scotland Yard spokesperson said.

"He has been taken into custody at a north London police station."

Mr Muk's owner Izabela Mnich, 34, who was left “very upset” after the cat vanished, has now been reunited with Mr Muk.

Speaking to the Standard before he was returned, Ms Mnich said: “My lovely cat has been ripped away from me.

“I do not know what to say to the person that took him, only that I want Muk to come back to me where he is safe and happy.”

Alongside the hashtag #MrMuckisComingHome, Islington Police added: "Mr Muk the Siberian Forest ginger cat was stolen from Islington in August. He has now been reunited with his owner."
