A popular pizza restaurant in the Northern Quarter has announced it will be closing this week after almost ten years in business.

PLY, situated on the corner of Lever Street and Stevenson Square, first opened its doors in March 2015 and became a popular spot for its freshly-made Neapolitan sourdough pizzas. Recently, it also served up focaccia sandwiches from Mickey’s and Southern Fried Chicken by Cardinal Rule.

However, bosses behind the restaurant have admitted the venue will now close its doors on Saturday this week (June 22). In a post on social media, PLY said the Northern Quarter site was ‘in need of some major TLC’ and would be making way for a new tenant.

The post wrote: “With a heavy heart, after nearly 10 years at Stevenson Square, this is our FINAL WEEK. Opening back in March 2015, PLY, originally born as Neapolitan Pizza Joint, dazzled customers with its trendy art and giant Mirror Tiled Pizza Oven. A staple of the Northern Quarter food and drink scene throughout the years.

“Most recently, with the introduction of Independent food traders including Mickys, Cardinal Rule and Lazy Tony’s. Unfortunately, after 10 years, our home at 26 Lever Street is in need of some major TLC and renovations that are sadly out of our hands, which is why the decision to close our venue has been made. A brand new tenant is coming so watch this space.”

In the post, the restaurant added a ‘huge thank you’ to its staff and team, alongside the independent traders and suppliers it has worked with over the years. PLY also thanked its regulars and ‘now friends’ who had visited the venue for food and drinks and to celebrate occasions since 2015.

Responding to the post, many of PLY’s regular customers shared their feelings on the announcement with many saying they were ‘gutted’ and 'sad' about the news. One person wrote: "Absolutely gutted, the original OG pizza place. The best times in here, gutted x"
