Powerful California Earthquake Visualized in USGS Simulation

The US Geological Survey (USGS) released a visual simulation of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Humboldt County, northern California, in the early hours of Tuesday, December 20.

Posting the video to Twitter on Wednesday, USGS called the visualization a “preliminary simulation” of how the quake may have focused shaking in specific areas.

At least 12 people were injured following the earthquake and thousands were left without power, local media reported.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services said damage to buildings and infrastructure was still being assessed, but that the scale of damage appeared to be “minimal” compared to the strength of the quake, reports said.
