Parting gift: Scudamore is stepping down as Premier League chief executive

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore is set to learn whether his £5million bonus has been agreed by the clubs amid mounting opposition over the proposal.

Scudamore steps down next month after almost 20 years in the role and Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck is believed to have led a drive to ask the 20 clubs to contribute £250,000 each as a parting gift. It is thought the motion needs the approval of at least 14 clubs to pass but it is understood several are reluctant to make the payment with fans’ groups applying pressure on them.

Fulham and Wolves are believed to be sceptical in part because they have spent sustained periods outside the top flight, while Liverpool and Everton have come under pressure from their local communities to vote against the plan.

Many clubs have pointed out the money could go towards grassroots football or charity but Cardiff have backed the deal.

When contacted by Standard Sport over whether the 59-year-old would refuse to accept any payment, the Premier League declined to comment.
