‘Primo’ Canceled at Amazon’s Freevee

Primo is no more at Amazon’s Freevee.

Creator Shea Serrano announced the news Tuesday on social media, noting that the series will not be returning for a second season at the ad-supported, Amazon-backed streamer Freevee. Sources say producers Universal Television will shop Primo in a bid to find the beloved comedy a new home.

“A short but beautiful run — sadly we’re not gonna be making any more episodes of PRIMO — i will always be indebted to everyone who worked on the show to make it so great and i will always be thankful to everyone who watched and championed it — thank you for real — long live PRIMO,” he wrote alongside a video of the rave reviews for the series from exec producer Mike Schur (Hacks, The Good Place) that doubled as a “For Your Consideration” promo.

Amazon picked up Primo to series in October 2021 after producing a pilot for the series that was previously developed for Disney-owned ABC. The then-IMDb TV platform launched the semi-autobiographical series based on Serrano’s life in May 2023 to strong reviews. The series currently has a rare 100 percent rating among critics and an equally impressive 97 percent score from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg called the series “authentically raucous and rollicking” in his review and another “low-key winner for Freevee.”

Sources say Freevee had been in conversations with producers Universal Television to renew the series for a second season and extended the options on its cast twice, but budget cuts across the landscape and a desire for broader-skewing programming ultimately led to the cancellation for the little-watched comedy.

The series revolved around Rafa, a 16-year-old high schooler in San Antonio and his family. Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Johnny Rey Diaz, Christina Vidal, Henri Esteve, Martin Martinez, Jonathan Medina, Carlos Santos, Nigel Siwabessy, Efrain Villa and Stakiah Lynn Washington starred in the series.

Meanwhile, Freevee has yet to make a formal decision on the future of the similarly well-reviewed coming-of-age comedy High School, based on the formative years of twin musicians Tegan & Sara from showrunner Clea DuVall. The series debuted Oct. 14, 2022. Given the extended timeline since the show premiered, High School‘s future looks dim to say the least.

The decision to cancel Primo comes as Freevee’s own future is murky. Since Amazon introduced an ad tier to its Prime Video offerings, the ad-supported free streamer is now considered redundant.
