Prince Harry Arrives in U.K. amid King Charles' Cancer Diagnosis While Meghan Markle Stays Home with Kids

The Duke of Sussex flew from Los Angeles to the U.K. after Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with cancer

Prince Harry has landed in the U.K. following the news of his father King Charles' cancer diagnosis.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, arrived in London on Tuesday after catching a flight from Los Angeles on Monday.

Two black SUVs believed to be escorting Prince Harry traveled with police vehicles from Heathrow Airport to Clarence House, King Charles' longtime residence in London. On Monday, King Charles returned to London from Sandringham, where he was photographed attending church with Queen Camilla on Sunday, to commence treatment as an out-patient.

It's believed that Prince Harry and King Charles haven't been together since the coronation ceremony in May.

"That is good," a source close to the royal household tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's cover story. “Hopefully [Harry] will bring the grandchildren at some point too, as that would be lovely for all of them."

Prince Harry traveled to his home country alone, leaving his wife Meghan Markle, 42, and their two children, 4-year-old son Prince Archie and 2-year-old daughter Princess Lilibet, at their home in Montecito, California. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to Meghan's home state after they stepped back as working members of the royal family in 2020.

Harry's return is the first time he's visited the U.K. since he attended the WellChild Awards in Sept. 2023. Last year, he also visited England in May to attend King Charles' coronation and in June to appear as a witness at the High Court of the Royal Courts of Justice to testify against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) over alleged unlawful information gathering. He also made a surprise appearance in London in March 2023 for a legal case in which he and other prominent figures including Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley and Jude Law's ex-wife Sadie Frost sued Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL), publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, for illegal information gathering.

Princess Beatrice, King Charles' niece, was spotted driving near Clarance House on Tuesday. It's possible that she went to visit the monarch, but she also lives nearby at St. James’ Palace.

There are "no plans" for Prince Harry to reunite with his brother, Prince William, while he is in the U.K., a royal source says. Prince William, 41, has stepped away from royal engagements in recent weeks as he spends time caring for his three children while his wife, Kate Middleton, recuperates from her recent abdominal surgery. The Prince of Wales is set to return to public duties on Wednesday with an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle and the annual fundraising gala for the London Air Ambulance.

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that the King, 75, had been diagnosed with cancer after undergoing a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. The palace added that the monarch does not have prostate cancer.

"During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer," the palace said in a statement.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual," they continued.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible," the statement added.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

PEOPLE understands that King Charles personally told his two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, about his cancer diagnosis.

The King also told his three siblings — Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward — before the news was made public.

On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the King's cancer had "been caught early."

“Obviously, like everyone else, shocked and sad, and just all our thoughts are with him and his family. Thankfully, this has been caught early,” Sunak said of the diagnosis during an appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“That’s what we’re all hoping and praying for, and I’m of course in regular contact with him and will continue to communicate with him as normal,” he continued.
