In the lead up to the release of Prince Harry’s new book memoir, SPARE, it appears that there’s a whole lot more royal drama set to unfold in the coming weeks...

The Duke of Sussex has made claims in his book that his father, King Charles, made a joke to his mother Princess Diana when he was born – remarking that she had delivered an heir and now a ‘spare’.

Prince Harry, who is 38, is alleging that the term has been in his life since day one and that the King told his mother: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare. My work is done.”

The book’s title SPARE comes from an old saying that implies the first son is an heir to titles, power and fortune, and a second son will remain a spare. Although the tell-all memoir isn’t due to hit shelves until next week, a leaked extract claims that Harry was also physically attacked by his brother, Prince William, in 2019.

The Guardian reports that things escalated quickly, and William grabbed Harry by the collar, ripped his necklace off and knocked him to the floor. Harry claims that it resulted in visible injury to his back. The Palace is yet to publicly comment on these claims.

The altercation allegedly started over a heated row about Meghan Markle, The Guardian writes. The Prince of Wales had called Meghan, who has been married to Harry for four years, “rude” and “abrasive”, which Harry said fuelled the “press narrative” of his wife, it reports.

Harry’s book is set to touch on stories from his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British army, his relationship with his parents and brother, and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding and marriage - right up to the present day and to their own experience of parenthood.

The couple have already made multiple unflattering accusations about royal life, most notably in their 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview and again more recently in their six part Netflix docu-series Harry & Meghan, which further threw shade at the way the royal households operate. In response to the book, Princess Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, said the British royal family will likely put on a united front.

Cosmopolitan UK has not yet seen a copy of SPARE, and has reached out to Harry’s representatives.
