Protests Follow Taliban Closure of Girls' High Schools

Protesters in the street and online were calling for the reopening of girls’ high schools in Afghanistan after the Taliban ordered them to remain closed on what was meant to be the day of their reopening on March 23.

Footage posted to Twitter by the outlet Aamaj News shows activists holding signs. The outlet told Storyful the footage was filmed in a residence in Kabul after students returned home following the Taliban order.

On Wednesday morning, an education ministry spokesman said girls’ schools above sixth grade would remain closed until further notice.

Tolo News interviewed young women in tears after they were barred from entering. Other footage posted to social media showed female students protesting in the city. Credit: Anonymous via Aamaj News via Storyful
