Update: More PS5 bundles from Currys have just been released. Read below for more details.

2022 looks to be one of the most promising years for PS5 gamers, with upcoming titles such as Elden Ring, Sifu, Horizon: Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and maybe even the PS5 VR2 headset coming in the next few months. But how difficult is it to get a PS5?

Well, we’re sad to say that customers are still struggling to get their hands on a PS5 console due to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, which has had a big impact on supply chains for over a year now.

Sony’s Playstation 5 was released in November 2020 and even though we’re now in 2022, demand for the console is still high. January has been one of the slowest months for restocks on record, but we have seen a handful of restocks from PlayStation Direct, Game, BT , Amazon, Very and AO, indicating that things are starting to pick up again.

As we enter February we’re hoping to see more regular stock updates from retailers. Our liveblog is here to get you one of Sony’s elusive next-gen consoles, as well as provide you with the details on the best games and accessories to grab alongside your new console. If you want to find out which online retailers will be the first to restock, then keep scrolling to receive updates as they happen.

When was the last John Lewis PS5 restock?

Thursday 27 January 2022 09:32 , Alex Lee

 (Independent/iStock)
(Independent/iStock)

Next up: John Lewis & Partners! Though we should warn you that it’s not a retailer to rely on. Drops take place roughly once every one to two months. The most recent restock took place on Wednesday 29 December. And before that, it restocked on Wednesday 3 November.

To make matters worse, we rarely ever see drops at John Lewis last longer than five minutes so even if you do catch a drop, checking out with it in your basket is a totally different story.

The retailer does always drop at 7am however, so it’s reliable in that regard. Could it drop before February? The chances are pretty slim, but we’ll never say never.

Could Currys PS5 stock drop this month?

Thursday 27 January 2022 09:47 , Alex Lee

 (iStock/Independent)
(iStock/Independent)

We used to loathe Currys drops because they were simply too exclusive for their own good. Consoles were reserved exclusively for those who had signed up to the VIP pass draw system. The problem? It closed to new entrants in June but the retailer was still sending codes out to people all the way up until December.

Last month, the retailer stopped sending codes out altogether (probably because there was no one left on the email list to send codes to) and began dropping stock for the general public, the same as everyone else.

It had a mammoth seven restocks last month and one final code restock on 2 December. Weirdly, since its last restock on 28 December, no restocks at Currys have taken place. Let’s hope that changes today. It seemed to favour Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, so tomorrow might be more of a possibility.

Best PS5 games

Thursday 27 January 2022 10:10 , Alex Lee

Even if you haven’t managed to buy a PS5 just yet, there’s no harm in a little a window shopping. You’re probably going to want to buy some games to go with your new machine either way. We’ve got a round-up of the best PS5 games for you to peruse.

In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales game (£44.99, Currys.co.uk), Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said. “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”

Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£57.99, Currys.co.uk) on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

Smyths Toys PS5 stock predictions

Thursday 27 January 2022 10:40 , Alex Lee

(iStock/Independent)

Smyths Toys is another retailer which hasn’t had a restock at all this month. According to the retailer’s website, it expects more consoles to be made available sometime in February, but take this with a pinch of salt.

That message is usually a placeholder and changes frequently. It also doesn’t take into account in-store restocks, meaning that if an in-store restock takes place, the website won’t be updated to reflect it.

We’re often relying on the @PS5StockAlertUK Twitter account to leak Smyths Toys restock dates thanks to the leaker’s insider knowledge. If it does drop, then it will likely be in-store, with doors opening up for pre-orders at around 8am. It’s dropped every single day of the week in the past – except weekends - so the next drop is anyone’s guess.

PS5 storage expansion

Thursday 27 January 2022 11:45 , Alex Lee

 (Seagate)
(Seagate)

Gamers can now expand their PlayStation 5’s internal storage with the installation of an M.2 SSD. If you’re looking to expand your PS5’s storage, then we recommend the Seagate firecuda 530, which comes with a heatsink. It costs £175 (Currys.co.uk).

“A cooling structure, like a heatsink, is something all PS5-compatible SSDs require in order to work correctly, and it’s nice that you don’t have to do a hatchet jot of installing your own with this Seagate model,” our writer said in their review. “The firecuda 530 lets you conveniently download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games straight from the internal storage, as well as media apps like Plex. Transfer speeds are blazing fast as well, with Seagate saying that it delivers speeds of up to 7,000MB/s.”

‘Horizon Forbidden West' is going to take up a lot of your PS5 storage

Thursday 27 January 2022 12:35 , Alex Lee

We’re not exaggerating when we say that next-generation games for the PS5 and Xbox series X consoles are massive. They often take up a huge amount of storage space, which can be a problem for the PS5 digital edition (and Xbox series S), due to it not having a disc drive, so entire games have to be downloaded and installed on the console itself.

We bring this up because it looks like the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West game will take up between 86GB and 120GB of storage – that’s almost an eighth of the PS5’s entire storage supply.

That’s why we recommend getting an SSD like the one in the post below. If you’re still intrigued about the game itself, have a read of our explainer:

Why is the PS5 digital edition harder to find than the disc edition?

Thursday 27 January 2022 14:15 , Alex Lee

If you’ve been following our stock updates for a while, you’ve probably noticed that the PS5 disc edition console is far easier to buy than the digital edition, with the digital console usually selling out in minutes.

It’s been this way ever since the console was first released back in November. When Eurogamer spoke to sources at various retailers before the console launched, it was told that retailers had been allocated around 25 per cent digital edition consoles and 75 per cent disc edition consoles.

We don’t know if the situation has changed since then, but we still see fewer digital edition consoles dropping than disc edition consoles. Retailers themselves might also prefer to order in the disc edition console over digital – they cost more (£449.99) for one, and they can bundle it with physical games to charge a premium.

Even though Sony built a lighter PS5 console, it still seems like the digital edition is harder to find than the disc.

‘Lego Star Wars’ PS5 release date

Thursday 27 January 2022 15:05 , Alex Lee

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was first announced all the way back in 2019 to coincide with the release of the upcoming Rise of Skywalker film, but as we’ve come to expect from video games these days, due to frequent delays it was pushed back again and again and again.

But thankfully, on 20 January 2022, a new trailer was released. And in it, we received confirmation that Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga would be launching on Tuesday 5 April 2022.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart' PS5 review

Thursday 27 January 2022 15:55 , Alex Lee

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of our favourite games of 2021 and won a spot in our round-up of the best PS5 games.

“Rift Apart has charm to burn, in its character design, lively combat mechanics, and explorable levels that feel large without seeming maze-like, busy without being cluttered,” our writer said in their review. “This is one of the best looks yet at what the new console generation has to offer. It’s big, it’s bright, and it’s almost impossible not to love”.

Currys is currently selling it for £59.99 – most places have it available for £69.99.

A recap of today’s PS5 restock events

Thursday 27 January 2022 17:04 , Alex Lee

Gee, Brain, what are we going to write in our closing post tonight?

The same thing we write every night, Pinky.

There have been no stock drops this week.

None. Nada. Nee. Non. Keiner. τίποτα. It’s been the driest week we’ve ever seen, but we’re not giving up! Tomorrow, we regroup! Tomorrow, we find consoles! Catch you all then.

Good morning, PS5 stock trackers

08:12 , Jasper Pickering

Morning everyone, we’re back with the PS5 liveblog to let you know when we might expect some imminent console drops.

On the PS5 front, things have been mighty slow this week. We haven’t seen a single PS5 being released by retailers, which makes the next restock just a little bit more exciting.

We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we catch wind of one. Stick with us as we post regular updates and give you tips on what to do with a PS5 when you eventually get your hands on one.

The best 4K TV for your new PS5

08:47 , Jasper Pickering

While we wait for the next PS5 restock, it’s time to think about upgrading your television. The PS5 outputs video at 4K resolution and can even handle games running at 120 frames per second. That’s something not all TVs can manage, so if you want to see your new console running at its best, a new TV could be worthwhile.

We’ve rounded up nine of the best 4K TVs available right now, from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, among others. And the great news is you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a great 4K television – prices of our favourites start at under £400.

‘Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection’ is out now

09:02 , Jasper Pickering

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is now available on the PS5. It’s a bundle combining the PS4’s Uncharted: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy into one package.

Both games have received the remaster treatment and look to be a great way to play them for the first time if you haven’t done so already.

‘Horizon Forbidden West’ new gameplay

09:18 , Jasper Pickering

One title we’re excited about on the PS5 is Horizon Forbidden West. It follows Aloy from the events of Horizon Zero Dawn which was released in 2017 on PS4.

We’ve seen gameplay on the PS5 before but how is it going to perform on the older generation of consoles?

The official Playstation twitter account posted some new gameplay running on the PS4 Pro and we have to say, it’s looking pretty smooth.

PS5 headset

09:39 , Jasper Pickering

Needing some accessories now that you’ve got a PS5 on the way? Check out Sony’s Playstation 5 pulse 3D wireless headset (£84.99, Amazon.co.uk), which landed a spot in our review of the best PS5 accessories.

Our tester said: “There’s no shortage of gaming headset options out there but the PlayStation 5 pulse 3D wireless headset is a little bit special. Made with certain PlayStation 5 games in mind, its 3D audio means you can feel fully immersed in the experience, feeling like things are truly happening all around you. “It’s a distinctive way of doing things that stands out more so than conventional headsets, even if not all games fully take advantage of it just yet. It can help you gain an advantage in certain titles too, which is always useful.

“It uses a wireless adapter to connect to your console rather than Bluetooth which is a minor irritant, and you’ll need to remember to recharge it, but it sounds fantastic and it’s comfy to wear even after a number of hours of playing.”

‘Dying Light 2: Stay Human’: How to pre-order

10:44 , Jasper Pickering

Dying Light 2: Stay Human is set to release in a week’s time. It’s the follow-up to Techland’s 2015 release of the same name, and from what we’ve seen from trailers and gameplay, it seems to be following in the footsteps of its predecessor and expanding its world.

In a recent tweet, the official social media account for Dying Light 2 claimed that to complete the game 100 per cent, it would require 500 hours of gameplay, so expect plenty of content.

Dualsense controller PS5

11:38 , Jasper Pickering

You get one dualsense controller out of the box, but we’d recommend getting another if you want to play with another person on the couch. Most of the bundles at Currys right now come with extra dualsense controllers.

“It has a comfortable ergonomic fit that moulds around your hands nicely, no matter what sized hands you have, and its buttons feel sleek and high-end,” our writer said in their round-up of the best PS5 accessories. “Besides looking and feeling good, it also has some useful features such as haptic feedback, which is a form of far superior vibration, and a set of trigger buttons that are much more responsive and tactile than previous PlayStation controllers.”

Sony recently released the dualsense controller in a range of new bright colours, including purple, pink and blue.

Elden Ring is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2022 and we can’t wait to get our hands on the game.

The action RPG was developed in collaboration with George RR Martin and from the early looks of the game, it promises to be just as demanding as previous FromSoftware titles such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

Elden Ring will be released on the PS5, as well as the Xbox series X, Xbox one, Playstation 4 and PC on 25 February. You can read more about what’s coming to the game in our article below.

Can you get a VPN on PS5?

12:39 , Jasper Pickering

While Sony doesn’t allow any VPN apps like NordVPN or ExpressVPN to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store (VPNs aren’t supported on the platform at all), there’s still a way to use a VPN on the PS5 if you want to stream geo-restricted content.

We’d recommend getting a VPN which has the Smart DNS feature. It’s a service provided by a number of firms, including NordVPN, allowing you to spoof your location on devices.

Nintendo Switch OLED review

14:21 , Jasper Pickering

If handheld gaming is more your thing then check out our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED. The console features an OLED display for the first time, which is larger than before and produces punchier colours and deeper blacks. There’s also a redesigned kickstand and double the internal storage of its predecessor.

Our reviewer said of the £309.99 console: “The larger display is fantastic and playing games in handheld mode is an absolute joy. The kickstand feels so solid and makes us never want to look at that little toggle on the back of the original Switch ever again...this is absolutely the best version of the console yet.”

Can you expand the storage on the PS5?

15:39 , Jasper Pickering

You sure can! After almost a year, Sony is letting gamers expand their PlayStation 5’s internal storage with the installation of an M.2 SSD.

PS5 stock tracker, signing off

16:57 , Jasper Pickering

That’s all from us today. After a particularly slow week, we finally saw some new bundles from Currys. Even if they were snapped up as quickly as they dropped, we hope you managed to get one of the consoles through checkout.

We’re very optimistic about February restocks as well. According to the Twitter account @PS5StockAlertUK we can expect Game to restock in the first half of the month:

The release date of 18 February bundles would match up with one of the biggest Playstation exclusives this year, Horizon Forbidden West, so it would make sense that Game would want to release new bundles to coincide with this.

Until then, we’ll be keeping you posted about all the other retailers we expect to see drops from soon.
