The Queen has honoured her late husband, Prince Philip in a touching post on the official Royal Family Instagram account, following his sad passing yesterday (9 April).
An official photograph of the Queen and Prince Philip, taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz in 2016, was accompanied by a famous quote from a speech the Queen gave in 1997:
"He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know."
The official tribute went on to explain how The Duke of Edinburgh has been a “devoted consort” (official companion to the Queen) for nearly 70 years, since the then Princess Elizabeth became Queen in 1952, just a few years into their marriage.
At the Queen’s official Coronation the following year, Prince Philip “swore to be Her Majesty’s ‘liege man of life and limb’”, a duty he upheld throughout more than seven decades at the Queen’s side.
Comments of condolence flooded into the post from the public, who commended the Duke’s service and honoured the love the couple had shared over their many years of marriage. Many also expressed their best wishes and thoughts to the Queen herself on such a personal, as well as public, loss.
The post ended by directing the public towards the Royal website, which has been dedicated to the many aspects of The Duke of Edinburgh’s life and work in his honour.

There is also information regarding his legacy of The Duke of Edinburgh Award and Internal Award scheme, which young people in more that 130 countries and territories are able to take part in.
