Queen of the South boss Peter Murphy faces his first home match since taking charge tonight as his side clashes with Clyde in a friendly.

Queens thumped Abbey Vale 7-0 at the weekend in another pre-season friendly in a game to mark the South of Scotland outfit’s 50th anniversary.

Murphy fielded a side mainly comprising trialists and youth players until midway through the second half when he introduced several first team players, including Benji Luissint who scored in the rout.

Murphy intends playing trialists again in this evening’s encounter with the Bully Wee, managed by former Queens team chief and player Ian McCall.

He said: “We will be playing a team, Clyde, who will be of a different calibre and give us a different test and more of a realistic view.

“The weather and pace took its toll on Abbey Vale, but again we must thank them for playing us in their anniversary game.

“It was a good workout and it was an opportunity for some of the trialists and the younger players to show what they could do.

“And I was very pleased with the way that we approached the game and we managed to save our first team players’ legs.

“They got only half an hour in the second half so I was delighted when they went on and kept the standard up.

“We managed to score a good few goals and it was a good day all round.

“Abbey Vale only started back their pre-season and had half a squad away in Germany supporting Scotland, so I want to say a big thank-you to them for accommodating us and putting on a good game. Their goalie did well and pulled off a lot of good saves.

“We had a good spread of goals from different areas as well. That was the most pleasing thing for me.

“I have only been in two weeks coaching players and some of those things we had been working on came to the fore at Vale which is pleasing, but there plenty of things to improve on and work on.”

Meanwhile, winger Kai Kennedy yesterday signed a one-year deal at Queens.

The 22-year-old kicked off his career at Rangers as a youth player in 2009 and has also played on loan at Inverness Caley, Raith, Dunfermline, Hamilton and Falkirk. He quit Ibrox for York City last year.

Murphy said: “We are really excited to have signed Kai. He is a good young player with a lot of first team experience. He has consistently been a thorn in the side of teams with his ability to quickly move down the wing and deliver the ball into the box.

“We feel he will be a real asset for us, we are delighted to have him in the squad and we look forward to working with him”.
