Rachel Weisz talks empowering sex scene with Rachel McAdams in Disobedience

Rachel Weisz has spoken about filming her highly praised sex scene in Disobedience with Rachel McAdams.

The Sebastián Lelio-directed movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, gaining praise for making the explicit scene tasteful and without a male gaze.

Speaking to the New York Times, Weisz detailed that she, as producer, agreed with Lelio that there were initially “too many orgasms” and one needed to be cut.

The actor said that initially both her character and McAdams’ Esti were seen on screen orgasming, but hers was eventually cut.

“Esti’s was more important, and it robbed her of that,” she told the publication.

Weisz added that the scene was empowering thanks to being so important and necessary to the movie’s narrative.

“I think we both felt very vulnerable and there was a real sweetness,” she continued.

“I don’t know if male actors ask this question but I know women normally think, ‘Is this sex scene really necessary?’ And in this case, it’s essential. The whole story of repression leads up to this moment. I think, particularly for Esti, the release of this big orgasm that she had was also a spiritual moment. It’s about freedom.”

Meanwhile, the actor recently announced herself and husband Daniel Craig are “expecting a little human” together.
