RAF Typhoon painted In World War II colours to mark 80th Anniversary of D-Day

This RAF Typhoon has been painted in the colours its predecessors were painted during World War II in tribute to the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The RAF Typhoon Display Team revealed the newly painted display aircraft for the 2024 Display Season at RAF Coningsby on Monday.

The aircraft is painted in a 1944 era ‘Day Fighter’ scheme In particular it remembers a Hawker Typhoon of 257 Squadron, FM-G. On D-Day the Hawker was flown by Pilot Officer Denzel Jenkins.

Jenkins began the war as an airman and was commissioned as an officer in Jan 1944. Later, he became Officer Commanding (OC) 257 and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Bold features, including the RAF Tactical Recognition Flash and the D-Day invasion features bring heaps of heritage to the display team this year. The display aircraft ZJ913 will be a regular at airshows around the UK, and will be nicknamed Moggy. Flt Lt David Turnbull from 29 Sqn RAF will be the display pilot for 2024.
