Range Rover Velar revealed ahead of Geneva motor show debut

Land Rover has released a teaser image of the Range Rover Velar, a sporty new SUV to take on the likes of the Porsche Macan, ahead of its global reveal at the Geneva motor show press day on March 7. It is likely to go on sale in the third quarter of this year.

Details are scarce ahead of further details being released at a launch in London on March 1, but Land Rover says that the Velar will occupy a gap in the Range Rover line-up between the entry-level Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

Given this, price-wise the Velar is likely to cost from about £50,000: the Range Rover Evoque line-up is priced from £30,900 to £52,400 while the Range Rover Sport costs from £59,700 to £96,900.

The teaser image above shows a full-length glass roof and indicates that the car has coupé-like rear styling that tapers towards the tailgate.

It also shows a large central touchscreen, so it's likely to feature some of the functionality previewed on sister company Jaguar's I-Pace. The teaser image was accompanied by a brief release stating that the Velar will feature "pioneering consumer technology".

The name marks a departure for Land Rover products. The company says that Velar links to the new car with the development of the original Range Rover prototypes in the late Sixties; when its development engineers needed to hide the identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin velare meaning to veil or cover.

Land Rover Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”
