Rangers star Ianis Hagi leads wild Romania celebrations as skipper hands on megaphone mantle in pointed move

Romania got their Euro 2024 campaign off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Ukraine and Ianis Hagi lead the post-match celebrations.

The Rangers star was a second half sub as Edward Iordanescu's side swatted the Ukrainians aside. Nicolae Stanciu's stunner got them started before second half strikes from Razvan Marin and Denis Dragus made it an afternoon to forget for error-prone keeper Andriy Lunin. Hagi made an appearance off the bench after enduring a tough time out on loan with Alaves and his Ibrox future remains uncertain, with Gers changing manager during his spell in Spain.

As the Romanian players took the acclaim of a huge travelling support in Munich, captain Stanciu emerged from the crowd with his country's flag draped around him and megaphone in hand ready to get involved. But he seemed to have a chnage of heart when he spotted Hagi, and made a beeline for the son of Romanian legend Gheorghe. He thrust the megaphone into his hand and ushered him into the centre of the line up.

Despite appearing reluctant at first, Hagi got the chants started as his teammates bounced around him. With Belgium and Slovakia playing tonight, Romania have given themselves an excellent chance of making the knockout stage with a big win on the same ground where Scotland were thumped by the hosts on opening night.

Speaking earlier this year, Hagi admitted he saw himself playing in Spain beyond the summer, putting his Glasgow future in serious doubt. He said: "Yes, it is where I want to be. It is the football in which I want to grow, it is the football that I believe can unlock the best version of me.

"I've only been here 6-7 months and I already feel like I'm a better player, I'm growing every day, in training and in games. I see progression every day and I believe that in the near future my best qualities will be unlocked and I will show everyone who I am. I love the level of La Liga, I love everything in Spain: the teams, the competition between players and teams, the pressure that exists here.

"I feel that it is the League in which I can be most successful and in which I can bring out all my qualities and it is the league that I have followed since I was a child and it was always my dream to be here. I'm here now and I want to be here for a long time."
