David Gray was the man who gave the Hibs faithful the moment they’d longed a lifetime for.

But some of the Easter Road faithful aren’t sure the 2016 Scottish Cup hero is the boss they need to deliver in the here and now. The former interim head coach has been given the Leith job on a permanent basis after penning a three-year deal.

But John Scott, Grassmoor, asked: “When are the present board going to learn from their mistakes Seriously, handing the job to yet another rookie — It's like the pilot of a Cessna being asked to fly an A380 full of passengers for the first time! Whatever the outcome, David Gray will still command respect from those of us who support Hibs but come on, there's some of us who can recall a long list of Hibs legends that couldn't handle the step up into the manager's post. That included John Yogi Hughes, who went on to claim Hibs were the perfect apprenticeship for the Hartlepool job. That’s really where Hibs are now."

Neil Renton, Leith, was equally sceptical, saying: “There’s no denying David Gray is a Hibs legend but his appointment as manager doesn’t instil me with confidence. He’s been a coach under three managers who’ve been sacked. Unless he’s going to be backed by the club and given millions to spend I think there’s a danger we’ll be back to square one.”

Meanwhile, Alan McGrotty, Kirkintilloch, reckons Rangers should be looking for a former Hibs employee to fill a vacancy of their own: “Rangers don't have to look too far to replace James Bisgrove. There's an ideal, top-class replacement sitting right in front of their eyes in Leeann Dempster. She has a fantastic record, a brilliant knowledge and understanding of Scottish football and as a bonus, comes from a big Rangers supporting family. To my knowledge she is also available to start immediately so let's get it done Gers.”

Stevie Jackson, Barrhead, called to have a pop back at one of this week’s callers: “For heaven’s sake, can the pathetic Gordon Ashley come into the modern world. So it's all Rangers' fault that the English show contempt for Scottish football due to one bad result against Liverpool? He then quotes teams his beloved Celtic beat 20 years ago! Maybe it's down to Celtic's pathetic showings in Europe in the past few years or so. Oh wait hold on sorry forgot they hit the post against Real Madrid.

Stuart McLeod, added: “Can I remind Gordon Ashley, the current Celtic manager lost six goals against Atletico Madrid this year and previously shipped seven to Barcelona and also another five to both Barca and PSG.

"And who can forget the 1-0 loss to Gibraltar giants Red Imps. I’m sure the English press would have seen nothing negative in any of these results.”

Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, rang in to hail the new Premier Sports TV deal that will see the broadcaster pick up an additional 20 Premiership games from next season: “As a lifelong Tory, can I say how delighted I am in the massive new TV deal struck between Premier Sports and the SPFL. Great news for armchair fans like me. As the late Baroness Thatcher would have said, ‘Let us rejoice in that news’.”

Finally Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “What a fabulous week for Scottish sport! Robert MacIntyre winning the Canadian open, Scotland women winning twice with ease against Israel, Scotland’s men winning too. But when we look at all the teams who have batted so far at the T20 Cricket World Cup, we are the only team not to lose a wicket. This is made better by the fact that the only team to bowl that hasn't taken a wicket is England, the current world champions who played Scotland! Scotland only drew the match as the weather went against us but it's surely a morale boosting result and a major downer for the Auld Enemy!”
