'Rare' Sichuan Takin Born at Indiana's Potawatomi Zoo

Indiana’s Potawatomi Zoo announced the birth of a Sichuan takin kid on Thursday, April 11, sharing footage of the baby exploring its new world.

The zoo said the baby was born on Wednesday around 12:15 pm to mom Yi Liu and dad Caboose.

“Like many other hoofed animals, their babies are able to stand and nurse within an hour or two of being born,” Potawatomi Zoo wrote on Facebook. “It only took this little one about 50 minutes to get on its feet and nurse!”

According to the zoo, Sichuan takin are a “rare species of animal that’s part of a family of animals colloquially known as ‘goat antelopes.’” Credit: Potawatomi Zoo via Storyful
