Liverpool need to take a point from their final Champions League group contest against Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday to make absolutely sure of their progress through to the knockout rounds.

The reigning European champions currently sit top of Group E, one point clear of Napoli and three ahead of their next opponents following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Serie A outfit at Anfield last month.

Jurgen Klopp's runaway Premier League leaders will also book their spot in the last 16 if Napoli lose at home to Genk on matchday six.

Travelling to Red Bull Arena in Austria, the Reds will be hoping for a much calmer affair than when these two sides last met in a seven-goal thriller on Merseyside in October.

Salzburg, who boast one of the hottest striking properties in European football in the shape of prolific teenager Erling Braut Haaland, can still reach the first knockout phase, though need to beat Liverpool and get a helping hand from bottom club Genk.

Champions League preview

Red Bull Salzburg vs Liverpool
Venue: Red Bull Arena
Kick-off time: 5:55pm GMT, Tuesday, December 10

Prediction: Red Bull Salzburg 1-3 Liverpool

Salzburg have proved they are certainly no pushovers during their second Champions League group stage campaign, trailing only Bayern Munich and Tottenham in the scoring charts.

They almost successfully wiped out a huge deficit during their last meeting with Liverpool and in Haaland have a real dangerman up front.

Liverpool had lost four consecutive away group games in this competition before a 4-1 win at Genk, but they should still prove too strong here.

Team news

Liverpool remain without Joel Matip, who is around two weeks away from returning from a knee injury.

Fellow centre-back Dejan Lovren was forced off during Saturday's 3-0 win at Bournemouth, but Klopp does not believe the issue to be serious.

That is also the case for midfielders Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum, who missed the trip to the south coast with minor knocks.

Fabinho is not expected to return from an ankle ligament injury until after Christmas, while Nathaniel Clyne (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Klopp has rotated his team frequently over recent weeks in order to cope with a hectic fixture schedule that includes this month's Club World Cup in Qatar.

Head to head (h2h) results and history

Salzburg trailed 3-0 at Anfield in October, only to battle back admirably to 3-3 before falling to a Mohamed Salah winner.

That was the first-ever competitive meeting between the two sides.
