Red Dwarf probably won't ever do a Christmas special
Spending Christmas Day with Lister and Kryten aboard the Red Dwarf seems like a jolly way to spend a holiday… but it probably won't ever happen.
Although the sci-fi comedy is having a renaissance at the moment, the team recently told Digital Spy that getting Dave and home video distributor the BBC to fit the bill for a festive adventure probably won't be making Santa's List anytime soon.
"Basically, because the show is quite expensive to make, it has to fit in with DVD schedules, and generally the BBC want to release it for Christmas," co-creator Doug Naylor explained to us.
"So to do a Christmas special is quite tricky. And because it gets very – I mean, who knows? We might do one, but it doesn't necessarily lend itself to, 'Let's have Christmas and a Christmas tree and presents."
That's not to say that Naylor and his cast haven't had some cracking ideas on how to teach Kryten all about the reason for the season.
"[We could have] Kryten wash Lister's socks, and makes them a little Christmas pudding. Only a very small one," Robert Llewellyn joked.
Craig Charles chimed in: "He irons my gussets. Freshly laundered gussets there. Happy Christmas."
In yet more holiday humbuggery, the crew also confirmed that upcoming finale episode 'Skipper' won't actually feature the return of Ace Rimmer, as some have assumed.
"Originally, it was called 'Starbots'," Naylor explained. "And that's where [Rimmer] quantum skips. It's about quantum skipping, rather than Ace Rimmer."
That said, Red Dwarf does have a holiday present for you: Norman Lovett will be returning as wonky computer Holly after 18 years. Merry Christmas!
Red Dwarf will return to Dave on Thursday, October 12.
