If you were on the Internet over the weekend, you probably would have seen the video of a spider crawling out of a man’s ear - and screamed after watching it.

However, the man behind the video has confessed that the whole thing was a hoax.

The brief clip shows the man filming the inside of his ear to try and see what was blocking it after swimming.

He wrote alongside the video: “A warning, this is a little disturbing.

“I went swimming at Lake of the Ozarks last weekend and got a super painful ear infection. Totally blocked ear canal.

“Tried to use my phones camera to see if I could see anything. Found this!”

And “this” turned out to be a creepy-looking spider that peeked out from inside the man’s ear before crawling back in while the man - an everyone else round the world - panicked.

But the man in the video turns out to be special effects guru Bruce Banit - who has been nominated for an Emmy for his visual effects work.

Updating his original post, he wrote: “Okay. So, yeah. I don't really have a spider in my ear.

“I did have a hell-of-a case of swimmers ear and that was the inspiration.”

He added to Buzzfeed: “I came down with a massive and painful plugged ear after swimming and held up my iPhone to see if I could see anything in there.

“The footage itself was pretty gross, so I imagined, what’s the worst thing you might find in there?

“Having the ability to do things like that, I added our little furry friend and freaked out millions of people.”

He certainly succeeded in that - viewers around the world were no doubt adding ear plugs to their holiday shopping list.

Branit himself, who has worked on shows like Lost and Breaking Bad, admits that he was surprised at everyone fooling for his hoax.

Still, keep those ear plugs in, just in case…
