Rene Hake set to join Manchester United coaching staff as overhaul continues

Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake is set to join the Manchester United coaching staff as part of an overhaul of their backroom staff.

Hake, 52, guided Go Ahead Eagles to ninth in the Eredivisie last season. Hake and United manager Erik ten Hag worked together at youth level at Twente and sources in the Netherlands expect them to reunite at United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is also weighing up an offer to rejoin United amid doubts that Benni McCarthy will be kept on. McCarthy joined United in 2022 but his contract expires this summer. Eric Ramsay left earlier this year to take over at MLS side Minnesota United.

United have declined to comment on any coaching arrivals amid their focus on a contract extension for Ten Hag.

It is understood United want a new coaching model akin to Manchester City, where Pep Guardiola is supported by an expansive backroom staff. Van Nistelrooy previously managed PSV Eindhoven and had been in the running for the vacant Burnley job.

The intended changes come after Ineos's review of the club's performance last season. United have held positive discussions with Ten Hag about a renewal but sources acknowledge that compromises are likely.

United have already head-hunted City's former chief football operating officer Omar Berrada to take over as chief executive. Ex-City academy director Jason Wilcox was installed as the United technical director in April and former City employee Toby Craig has joined as chief communications officer.

Wilcox was recommended by Berrada, who does not take official charge until July 13, and the Moroccan is believed to have a close working relationship with Craig.

Assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag and analyst Kevin Keij followed Ten Hag to United from Ajax two years ago and Steve McClaren returned to the club as first team coach.
