Rescue Workers Request Silence as They Try to Locate Turkey Earthquake Victims

Local news reported that at least 2,379 people were killed after a powerful earthquake struck the southeast of Turkey in the early hours of Monday, February 6, citing Vice President Fuat Oktay.

Anadolu Agency, a state-run news agency in Turkey, reported that at least 11,000 were injured in the quake and powerful aftershocks and that over 7,000 people were rescued from rubble.

Footage captured by journalist Piotr Zalewski shows rescue workers standing on top of a large pile of debris in Adana, a city in southern Turkey. According to Zalewski, the workers were calling for quiet in an attempt to hear someone trapped under the rubble.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a national mourning period for seven days and said the Turkish flag would be flown at half-mast until sunset on February 12.

Over 700 people were also killed by the quakes in neighboring Syria, according to state-controlled news agency Sana. Credit: Piotr Zalewski via Storyful
