After Emily VanCamp's departure from Fox's The Resident was recently reported, network boss Michael Thorn has revealed details about the star's exit.

The popular medical drama is heading into its fifth season, but VanCamp won't be returning, and her character Nicolette 'Nic' Nevin's storyline is expected to be wrapped up early into the run.

During an interview ahead of Fox's Television Critics Association presentation, Deadline asked Thorn about The Resident's future without VanCamp, who is also best known for her role as Sharon Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Emily is certainly a big part of the show but like many ensemble dramas that have incredible creators behind it, we believe we're going to still really connect with our audience on the stories that we’re telling this season," he said.

Thorn also teased how Nic will be written off and mentioned the series will add new characters following VanCamp's exit.

"The audience is going to be surprised and emotionally engaged with how we handle Emily's departure and the way that it affects all of the other characters," he said.

"And yes, we will be introducing some new characters as we go along, but I think it's going to be another excellent season. [Creator] Amy Holden Jones does an incredible job."

"We're very pleased with how the creative team handled it. And I think the audience, The Resident has a very passionate fan base. And I think the audience is really going to engage.

"It's very emotional and I'm looking forward to taking the beginning of the season, which is excellent so far, and sharing it with our audience."
