If you were in Milford recently you may have been confused by the emergence of a new town. While a new road sign might declare that it is only one mile to ‘Goldalming’, this is of course rubbish. ‘Goldaming’ doesn’t exist.

It is clear that the sign was meant to be pointing to the lovely town of Godalming. Maxine Gale, an independent Waverley Borough Councillor for Witley & Milford Ward, told SurreyLive: “Because I’m the local Borough Councillor I get sent everything. [The sign] came in and I thought this really can’t be true. I thought somebody has done an AI photo.

“It has caused quite a stir, but actually it's really just an annoyance because it means that nobody has really taken the time. It’s a lack of attention.”

Maxine, 68, said that some locals had been angry but that a number had also found it quite amusing. Maxine said: “Godalming is a strange town name and we do see it spelt in many different ways. Quite often you receive bits and pieces through and Godalming is spelt incorrectly and also you hear it on the radio. Sometimes they can’t actually pronounce it how we would.”

The sign, which is outside Secretts of Milford, has now been amended with a white stripe covering the offending ‘l’. This means that the sign now reads Go dalming. Maxine told SurreyLive: “I think it's a lovely sign highlighting the fact that we have a railway station and somewhere to park, just maybe make the spelling correct, that would be super.”

A Surrey County Council Spokesperson said: "Our contractor has confirmed that this was a mistake made by their sign manufacturer. This is in the process of being rectified, at no additional cost to Surrey County Council.”
