Hawksmoor Manchester: Restaurant diner accidentally served up £4,500 bottle of wine

A restaurant diner had a special treat when they were accidentally served up a £4,500 bottle of wine.

Hawksmoor Manchester shared the gaffe in a tweet on Thursday, revealing that the previous evening a customer had accidentally been given a bottle of Chateau le Pin Pomerol 2001, which is £4,500 on its menu.

“To the customer who accidentally got given a bottle of Chateau le Pin Pomerol 2001, which is £4500 on our menu, last night - hope you enjoyed your evening!” they wrote.

And while such a mistake might be seen as a sackable offence to many, the restaurant seemed far more forgiving, adding: “To the member of staff who accidentally gave it away, chin up! One-off mistakes happen and we love you anyway”

The restaurant told Yahoo News UK the member of staff picked up the wrong bottle of wine after mistaking it for another Bordeaux of the same vintage.

The customer drank the wine without noticing, and the manager only realised what had happened later that evening.

The lucky diner had ordered a 2001 Chateau Pichon Longueville Contesse de Lalande.

Chateau le Pin is one of the world’s most exclusive - and most expensive - red wines.

It comes from Bordeaux's Pomerol appellation in the Catusseau hamlet of Gironde and only 500 cases of the 2001 vintage were made - hence the high price.

Tasting notes describe it as having a “deep ruby/plum/purple colour is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of creme de cassis, cherry liqueur, plums, liquorice, caramel, and sweet toast."

The tweet prompted plenty of reaction, with some people wondering whether the customer had noticed the fine wine they were supping.

Others praised the restaurant’s attitude to its member of staff.

One person wrote: “As someone who works in hospitality, bless you for being understanding and not flying off the handle at the poor lad/lass.”

Another said: “Great response, great attitude.”
